Season opening day at nhill bowls

last Saturday on a warm and windy spring day the Nhill Bowling Club held their official opening day for the upcoming season. The club also invited and had in attendance a number of bowlers from Kaniva and Serviceton as both these clubs are having their greens and facilities upgraded at the present time.

After a barbecue provided by the club it saw club President, Terry Robins welcome all bowlers, new bowlers and visitors to the day's proceedings and a game of bowls. Kaniva President Maree Van Kempen and Serviceton President Rick Miles also spoke on behalf of their club's facility upgrade. This year the honour of rolling the first jack of the season was given to Kaniva's life member and oldest bowler in Tige Maddern. This was followed by a first bowl by Nhill's current men's singles champion Greg Ryan followed by bowls by Maree Van Kempen (Kaniva) and Rick Miles (Serviceton). To start the season the traditional spider was conducted and it was won by Ryder Byrnes. Over 60 bowlers then played three games of fours and surprisingly no team won all three games. Winning the day with two wins and a draw was a composite team of Ryder Byrnes/Jeff Fritsch/Barry Cramer/Ian Austin (Kaniva)/Suzette Chadwick on two wins and a draw. Seven teams won two matches and on a countback it saw Barry Morrison/Rick Miles (Serviceton)/Maree Van Kempen/Robert Harris score 55.5 points just ahead of Matt Morrison/Janet Kuchel (Kaniva)/Robert Cook/Jayne Miles (Serviceton) on 54.5 points. Raffle winners for the day were Robert Harris (meat tray), Belinda Puglisi (Kaniva) (drinks) and minor prizes to Robyn Hendy (Kaniva), Steve Duthie (Kaniva) and Ken Dodds.
