Thanks to profits from Nhill’s Book Fair, the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre has replaced 40 plaques along the Heritage Walk at the aerodrome.
The plaques feature photos and descriptions of buildings from Nhill’s Second World War RAAF Base. Built in 1941 as part of the Empire Air Training Scheme, the base accommodated up to 1,000 personnel at a time. More than 10,000 servicemen and women are estimated to have passed through the Air School during its five years of operation before it was decommissioned and the buildings sold in 1946. The only remaining buildings from that era are the Bellman Hangar, now leased by the Nhill Aero Club, the Aero Club rooms and the Flight Office. After a two-day clearing sale, only the concrete bases remain from the transportable buildings brought from Ballarat. Many of those buildings can now be seen on farms and in towns across the district.
