A remarkable family reunion took place in Nhill recently, as brother and sister Ken Wells and Joyce Borgelt — aged 100 and 102 — gathered with relatives spanning several generations to celebrate family, memories, and a life shaped by hard work in a world that looks very different to the one we now live in. Ken and Joyce’s mother also enjoyed a long life, passing away at the age of 103. There are approximately 7000 centenarians in Australia, only 25% of them are men. Sadly, Ken and Joyce’s younger brother Rob passed away 8 years ago.
The reunion brought together cousins, children, grandchildren and extended family members and friends who travelled from near and far to share the special occasion. At the centre of the gathering were Ken and Joyce, whose combined ages of more than two centuries drew admiration and plenty of curiosity from younger family members eager to hear stories of the past. Another guest, Merv Schneider is also a centenarian. He shared an interesting story of his connection to the Borgelt family.
